College of Education

The College of Education (COE) is the organizational unit for the Department of Teacher Education, the Interdisciplinary Studies Degree program, TRiO programs, the STEM Education Teaching and Learning Lab and the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP). The Dean of the College of Education provides leadership for the unit and works collaboratively with deans of the other units to ensure continuity with university-wide initiatives and to develop community partners.

The Department of Teacher Education offers a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSED) in:

Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Visual and Performing Arts with concentrations in music education offered jointly with the Department of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Wellness

In the state of Georgia, the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) approves teacher preparation programs leading to state certification. Students who wish to become teacher candidates must meet GaPSC requirements throughout the program, which includes a separate application process for admission to the Teacher Preparation Program.

The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIDS) Degree Program offers learning in a broad range of subject areas across the colleges and majors in the university leading to a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIDS) degree. Students in the BIDS program choose from three concentrations:

Students who are in the BS programs in mathematics or biology who are in good standing can apply to the Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program to add on teacher certification while earning their bachelor’s degree. Students with qualifying GPAs may apply for a $10,000 Noyce Scholarship

Students with a Bachelors degree who seek teacher certification only, may apply for the post-baccalaureate non-degree teaching certification program.  Graduate students or STEM professionals with a BS degree in biology, mathematics or engineering may be eligible to apply to the Noyce Scholarship program as post-baccalaureate students.  The College of Education will offer the Urban Endorsement beginning Spring 2020.

Additionally, students who meet the College of Education’s admission requirements and are accepted in the COE preparation programs, may apply for the $4,000 TEACH Grant.

TRiO programs at Savannah State University include three programs: Educational Talent Search, Student Support Services and Upward Bound. These programs are designed to primarily serve low-income individuals, first-generation college students and individuals with disabilities from middle school through their post-secondary programs with academic support, guidance and opportunities to participate in educational and enrichment activities.

GEAR UP and Gear Up Georgia Programs at Savannah State University include two programs that work in collaboration with the Savannah-Chatham Country Public School System (SCCPSS). GEAR UP are discretionary grant programs designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary education. GEAR UP provides six-year grants to states and partnerships to provide services at high-poverty middle and high schools. GEAR UP serves a cohort of students beginning no later than the seventh grade and follows the cohort through high school and into their first year of post-secondary education.
