Summer Internships at External Labs and Businesses

Contact your faculty advisor for information on summer internships at labs and industries nationwide in your area of interest.  A good compilation of summer internships is by NSF, which funds hundreds of REU (summer research training for undergraduates) programs nationwide.  You can search on NSF REU programs by discipline here.

Additional Research Training and Internship Opportunities 

SSU has additional funded projects (whose main goal is to conduct basic research or develop new curriculum) which also support undergraduates and high school students in research training and internships. Please contact faculty in Biology (Dr. Takayuki Nitta), Chemistry (Dr. Kai Shen, Dr. Pascal Binda), Marine Science (Dr. Amanda Kaltenberg), Environmental Science (Dr. Kenneth Sajwan), and Mathematics (Dr. Agegnehu Atena, Dr. Chowdhury) for information on research training opportunities/internships with their programs.

Additional Scholarship & Fellowship Opportunities

In addition to the above scholarship programs which are awarded directly to SSU, students are encouraged to apply to fellowships and scholarships on an individual basis, to support their graduate studies or to support their training at top-tier labs. 

NSF Graduate Fellowships

Students should apply by October of their senior year. Available to eligible STEM and social science majors. Provides 3 years of support for graduate studies, currently up to $138,000.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship

Department of Defense STEM Scholarships

Department of Defense (DOD) provides funding at both graduate and undergraduate levels, including training at DOD labs. These highly competitive graduate fellowships have no service commitment.

Undergraduate scholarships (SMART program) provide internships at DOD labs and financial support; following graduation there is a service commitment through employment at DOD labs.
